According to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center, three are missing after an avalanche that occurred between the towns of Silverton and Ophir struck four on Monday. One of the three was located and recovered with minor injuries, though the search continues for the other three in the party.
When the avalanche occurred, the party was backcountry skiing in an area called ‘The Nose.’ This is near South Lookout Peak in the southwestern region of the state. The avalanche prompted search and rescue efforts that lasted into the night.
The avalanche occurred on a northeast-facing slope near treeline at about 11,500 feet of elevation. Avalanche risk was rated ‘considerable’ in the San Juans at the time, a three of five on the risk rating scale. The area has seen fresh accumulation in recent days.
Those involved have not been identified. Additional details about what “minor” injuries the recovered party sustained have not been released.
According to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center website, four people have been killed by avalanches during the 2020-2021 snow season – all skiers. In total, 10 people have been buried – eight skiers, one snowboarder, and one snowmobiler. During the 2019-2020 season, there were seven people buried by avalanches and six killed, which compares to 16 buried and eight killed during the 2018-2019 snow season.
