In a few sentences, describe your dataxu experience (roles you’ve held, things you’ve learned, favorite moments). What’s your fondest memory about your first days/weeks at dataxu? How did you spend your 4 week sabbatical? What was the best part about it?
It was March of 2013 when I arrived at dataxu, and from the moment I got to Boston (March 17th – also the date that NASA recorded the largest ever lunar meteor impact on video) it felt more like joining a worthwhile cause for good, and a team of extremely talented and intelligent people than just landing a new job. Hired as a Sales Engineer I was given more information in new hire training about the company than I had ever learned about the other companies I had worked at previously – I was energized. At the time, “Year 5 – Sabbatical” seemed a lifetime away, but there was hardly time to think about it, my wife was pregnant with our son Maxwell and dataxu was growing fast, the programmatic industry was evolving before our eyes everyday – and still is in some ways.
As it approached I thought long and hard about how I would spend that time, thinking – “this is a lot of time off, I should engage in something monumental, or take an epic, adventurous trip” – but in the end, I realized that focusing on the things that would have the most impact on my life didn’t require being busy doing ‘stuff’. Rather, quiet introspection and being present for my son turned out to be exactly what I needed. Of course I took care of some deferred household projects, and did a little travel to the mountains of Colorado with the family – but the things that had lasting impact were beginning a daily meditation practice (since which I have quit smoking cigarettes after being a smoker for 30 years) and time spent being there for family. I’m glad I did, because the 4 weeks flew by. The great news is, that returning to work didn’t feel like an ending, but the beginning of a new chapter, I am Senior Manager of the Solutions Architecture team now and have new skills to hone, and am (still) excited to be part of the evolution of our industry and our company. To sum it up, sabbatical definitely re-energized me, here’s to the next 5 years!
